Profile:

Center for deaf mothers UPMD (CNM) provided from July 2004 for deaf mothers just as for care of mothers who hear. Hearing impaired mothers from all of Czech Republic can be delivered here. Before delivery it is important to visit in consultation after crossing ordering (fax, mobile, e-mail) 4 assistants work there, who have a command of basic sign language and demonstrate consultations between mothers and professionals.

Care of deaf mothers begins already before delivery. One time a week in this period there is available for pregnant women the presence of a sign language interpreter from the central dispatcher of care Tamtam. It is possible to agree on an interpreters visit individually, for example for ultrasound examination, etc.

If mother wishes, she can have a interpreter for the whole period of the delivery. Most mothers use the same interpreter, who they know from previous encounters.

For mothers there is available one room set up with special equipment-computer, light and vibration signaling crying of child, signaling knocking at the door. We utilize the system of rooming in, which means that the mother continuously has the child with her.

Already in the course of stay with us it is possible to examine hearing of newborns, so family immediately knows, if their child will be hearing handicapped. Futhermore, it is possible to work together with a hearing workplace in the faculty hospital in Motol and Center of early care Tamtam.
