ÚPMD / Milk bank

The milk bank at UPMD came to existence in the year 1991 with the aim to provide mothers milk for all newborns, primarily for premature or sick babies. The milk bank service is economically very demanding. On the other hand, we have always secured enough mothers milk as is optimal use for our newborns.

At present the milk bank functions and stores:

1. Milk form breast milk donators used primarily for premature babies in the department of intensive care.
2. Discharge breast milk from mothers of premature babies serving as nutrition for these babies.
3. Fabricates breast milk excess form the postpartum department.

The breast milk donor can be every healthy woman with excess of breast-milk, who:

1. Does not take any medications
2. Undergoes all duty examinations

The mother produces and freezes the milk at home, then the milk is brought once per week to the UPMD milk bank.

The milk is examined, pasteurized and kept in a freezing room at the milk bank, from where it is distributed either to single UPMD departments or to newborn departments at other hospitals.

There is possible its sale for released newborns and suckers too.

The milk is regularly controlled and examined:

1. for presence of bacteria
2. for presence of cow milk proteins
3. The degree of fat is determined

Yearly the milk bank receives about 30 donors of breast milk, some of them were donors repeatedly. In average, there is cultivated 150 liters monthly in the blood bank.

The UPMD milk offers pasteurized breast milk for sale

The milk is delivered in frozen state in 100,200, or 500ml bottles.

It is suitable there, where the own mother can not or does not want to suckle. It comes in useful for premature or sick babies or there, where it is necessary full term newborns temporary.

The milk processing and examining is subject to strict hygienic regulations, there not just the milk, but also every donor is completely examined.

The actual milk price is 900 Czk for 1 litr.
